After the “Northern smoke” settled, the Driftwars main championship kicked in this Sunday, April 29th in Athens. The first round took place on Kartodromo circuit’s twisty tarmac and Screamingtyres was there to capture you the event’s tyre killing action.
Many drivers had their rides freshened up and upgraded for the this year’s season. Like Takis Konstandaras’ AE86 for instance…
…Or Loukas Kostaras’ Nissan Silvia, which has only the exterior left as a work in progress
Lambros Koltoukis with his driftwarrior came all the way from Zakynthos island to fight with the rest of the tire abusing crew.
Lambro’s cossie powered RX7 took part to some awesome fights against Louka’s Kostara’s SR20det powered Silvia…
…And with Tountas garage’s Escort as well.
Stathis Papargiropoulos left the event organizing job to race with Tountas garage MK2 escort.
You can see him drifting alongside Nicko’s Lardis V8 powered station wagon BMW.
Unfortunately it was a bad day for Nickos , and with a small yet but crucial mistake Stathis forced him out of the fight for the finals.
It was one hell of a day for Tassos Harkas. He drove his angle freak Bimmer to the edge and he easily gained access to the semi-finals but…
… Hell came loose when a tyre got off the wheel during his first pass with Stathis Papargiropoulos, and since Driftwars regulations don’t allow pit stops during a race Stathis claimed his ticket to the final…
…Forcing Harkas to fight George Tsilimbonis for the third place. Tsilimbonis won this set of battles by a tiny margin relegating Harkasto the 4th place.
Before that change in his luck Harkas entertained the many spectators with some aggressive runs, like this one with Takis Konstantaras.
Themis Marinakis didn’t have time to finish his E30 BMW’s build. However his “thirst” for racing lead him to the next best possible solution .. He rented the drift monkey !
The following 3 photos show you how easily things can go bad during a race. This Starlet is taking the first corner smoothly…
…However something went wrong while transitioning to the next corner and the weight transfer forced the car to understeer…
Leading the car straight to the run off area. As you may notice the run off area where the Starlet “landed” is steep and rugged. With a little help from the tyre-wall, his brakes, and possibly God himself, the car stopped right before the dune instead of falling off of it.
As the finals were approaching things got quite tighter during the runs. Christos Hatzaras and George Tsilimbonis fought hard for a spot in the final quarted. Hatzaras took the ticket to the final.
Christos Hatzaras and Stathis Papargiropoulos then fought for the first place.
an Christos Hatzaras clinched first place after a close battle that left the judges with a hard decision to make.
As the race came to an end here i’m leaving you the final results. I hope you appreciated watching the event through our eyes as much as we enjoyed capturing it! – Urbanslider
